The Rajya Sabha on Thursday passed the Delhi Special Police Establishment (Amendment) Bill, 2014 wherein, the CBI director will henceforth be selected by a panel comprising of the Prime Minister, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha or the leader of the single largest party in the House and Chief Justice of India or any Supreme Court Judge.

This development will lead to the appointment of a new chief before incumbent Ranjit Sinha retires on December 2.

Earlier on Wednesday, the bill was passed by the Lok Sabha by a voice vote. Previously, there was no provision of the leader of the single largest party in the panel.
