Rare 1960s Ferrari sets world record with $27.5-million sale

A rare 1960s Ferrari convertible has set a world record after being sold for 27.5 million dollars in California.

The 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4S NART Spyder's price was the most paid at auction anywhere in the world and the most for any car bought at a US public sale.

According to stuff.co.nz, the car is very special, as they are so rare and among the most beautiful of all Ferraris, UK-based dealer John Collins, who was the under bidder at the RM Auctions event, said.

Canadian fashion entrepreneur Lawrence Stroll, a motor racing enthusiast, was bidding in the room via an intermediary, dealers said, who also identified Stroll as the buyer, the report said.

An after-hours call to Stroll's, who built Tommy Hilfiger into a global brand in the 1990s, New York office to confirm the purchase was not immediately returned.

RM said that proceeds of the sale of the Ferrari will be donated to charity.
