United States President Donald Trump stated that the US was ready to make a "real deal" with Iran.

Addressing the Veterans of Foreign War convention here on Tuesday, Trump said "We'll see what happens. We're ready to make a real deal, not the deal done by the previous administration, which was a real disaster."

He further opined that Iran was not the same country as before, and termed the nuclear deal as a 'horrible one-sided' deal, CNN reported.

The Iran nuclear deal was signed between six countries in 2015 - Iran, US, Britain, Germany, Russia, France, and China- for lifting economic sanctions on Tehran in exchange for limitations to the country's nuclear programme.

However, Trump announced the US' withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) or the Iran nuclear deal in May, which limited the country's uranium enrichment in exchange for sanctions relief.

Calling the accord as an "embarrassment" that was "defective at its core", the US President then warned of severe consequences if Iran resumed its nuclear programme.

Earlier this week, the war-of-words on Twitter between Iran and Trump saw no signs of abating, as Trump cautioned Rouhani to not threaten the United States.

"To Iranian President Rouhani: NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE. WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!" he tweeted.

In retaliation, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Monday warned Trump to 'be cautious'.
