The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday informed the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) that they were willing to allot two acres of land near the Gandhi Mandapam in Chennai for laying DMK president M. Karunanidhi to rest.
This comes after DMK working president M. K. Stalin presented a memorandum to Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, seeking permission to bury Karunanidhi near the Anna Memorial at Marina beach.
However, the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary said that the request could not be sanctioned, owing to the legal issues at Marina Beach.
Senior DMK leader, Durai Murugan had confirmed that the request for Karunanidhi's 'Samadhi' near the Anna Memorial was made before the Tamil Nadu government, but no response had been received in this regard.
Meanwhile, the state government has declared a state-wide holiday tomorrow, along with seven-day mourning. Also, a directive to fly Indian flags at half mast has been issued.
The five-time chief minister passed away on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. He was 94.
Tamil Nadu's Kalaignar breathed his last at Kauvery Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment for a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI).
Karunanidhi is survived by three wives and six children.
