Reward increased for info of missing JNU student to Rs 5,00,000

Delhi police on Wednesday increased the reward from Rs 2,00,000 to 5,00,000 for the person who provides information about missing Jawaharlal Nehru University student Najeeb Ahmed.

On Tuesday, the JNU administration denied permission to its student body to hold a "Chalo JNU" protest at the varsity campus.

The JNUSU had planned the protest as a show of solidarity for student Najeeb Ahmed, a 27-year-old M.Sc. student, who went missing from the campus a month ago after a scuffle with an ABVP member.

The reason for denying the permission, according to the university, was due to the anticipated "unrest and security concerns".

To put pressure on the police and administration, the student union had asked the teachers, university students and locals to participate in the event and gather at Ganga Dhaba, inside the campus.

On October 14, Ahmed - a fresher in JNU - was allegedly slapped an ABVP member canvassing for hostel elections and later went missing.

Since then, the students, along with Najeeb's mother and sister, have been protesting at the campus against the alleged police inaction and demanding the arrest of ABVP members.

A police complaint was filed under section 365 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) for kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine a person, and a proctorial inquiry was also initiated by the varsity.
