Roman Polanski has enlisted an attorney to help him close the long-simmering statutory rape case first brought against him in 1977.

Alan Dershowitz, who had helped overturn Claus von Bulow's murder conviction in the 1980s, has filed in LA Superior Court saying that the director has taken responsibility for his actions, served his sentence, and a remedy should now be fashioned by the court once and for all, Deadline.com reported.

Polanski fled the U.S. right before Judge Laurence J. Rittenband, who presided over his original proceedings, was about to hand down his sentence and by that time he had already pled guilty to a charge of "unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor" and spent 42 days in prison undergoing psychiatric evaluation as part of a plea deal that saw other charges against him dropped.

However, when he learned that the judge might impose additional jail time, he left and has never returned, despite repeated attempts to extradite him.
