World number one Rory Mcllroy shot an 11-under 61to break his own record at the Quail Hallow course and took a four-stroke lead after three rounds of the Wells Fargo Championship on Saturday.

Mcllroy broke his own record of 62, which he had set during his victory in 2010. He also set the tournament's 54-hole scoring mark, with total of 18-under-par 198.

The world number one, who could manage two pars in the last two holes, needed to birdie the last two holes to join the seven Professional Golfers Association (PGA) players to score 59.

Mcllroy said that he was thinking of a score of around 59 from the 14th teebox, the BBC reported.

He added that the Quail Hallow is a course where he felt he could get a 'roll on' with.

However, the highlight of the day was when Mcllroy drove the green on the 345-yard, par four 14th hole for the fourth time in his career, and became the only player to do so in the tournament's history.
