A British university has paid 962,500 pounds for a manuscript of one of Samuel Beckett's most famous novels, 'Murphy', featuring the Irish writer's notes and doodles, at an auction at Sotheby's.

The manuscripts were written in six 1930s school exercise books containing eight different versions of the opening sentence, the BBC reported.

The University of Reading, which bought the manuscript to add to its collection of more than 500 manuscripts and drafts, said it was "thrilled" to get the novel.
