Former NCW member Nirmala Sawant said the Dimapur incident was revenge upon the violence taking place against women, adding that the police should ensure that such people are not protected.
"Why they did that? They did not do it for themselves, they took revenge upon the violence taking place against the women," said Sawant.
"The police should learn how the society is intolerant of the rape and victimisation of women. The police should see to it that such people are not protected and are convicted," she added.
Meanwhile, Women Rights Activist Pramila Nesargi expressed serious concern over the incident and said the people have taken the law in their hands because they know that the judicial system would not give them justice
"The immediate reaction because of Mukesh Singh's statement and the documentary had made people to think that they have lost faith in the judicial system. They know that judicial system will not give them justice and that's why public have took the law in their own hands and they want to make sure that justice is done to the rape victim," Nesargi told ANI here.
"10,000 people have entered the jail, dragged the person out....I think the time has come that the law has to be amended and people have no patience to wait for the judicial system and wait for years together," she added.
A mob in Nagaland barged into the Dimapur Central Jail on Thursday afternoon, dragged out a rape accused and lynched him. The police said the mob overpowered jail security, tied up the man and dragged him for seven kilometres, thrashing him along the way. By the end, he succumbed to his injuries.
The victim has been identified as 35-year-old Syed Farid Khan, a small-time trader who dealt in scrap and used motor cars.
