The Supreme Court on Monday gave its green signal to the selection of new Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) vice-chancellor and rejected a plea to halt the process.

The apex court headed by Chief Justice of India Jagdish Singh Khehar said the new panel satisfies all the UGC norms.

One, Abrar Ahmed had approached the apex court claiming that the AMU has shortlisted three names for the vice-chancellor without following the mandatory UGC norms.

He claimed in his plea, that as per the UGC norms, a vice-chancellor should have at least 10 years experience as a professor.

AMU lawyer said it is not mandatory for the university to follow UGC norms but the varsity has shortlisted three people who are academicians.
