The United States Supreme Court has rejected appeals against gay marriages in five states including, Indiana, Utah, Oklahoma, Virginia and Wisconsin.

The decision has pushed the number of states where same-sex marriage is legal to 30, in addition to the District of Columbia, reported the BBC.

By rejecting the appeals, the court left the lower court rulings intact that had struck down those state bans. The verdict just stopped short of resolving the contentious issue of same-sex marriage nationwide.

However, it has been received "rapturously" by gay marriage campaigners.
