Scientists have claimed that the obsession with selfies is fuelling the desire to undergo cosmetic surgery among young people.

Experts said that the relentless rise of the mobile phone pictures and fixation on celebrity culture is creating unrealistic expectations, Metro.co.uk reported.

Researchers said that selfies obsession has led to a rise in requests for surgery procedures from 'patients being more self-aware of looks in social media'.

According to Marc Pacifico, from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, young people felt under "incessant pressure" to be perfect, comparing themselves to digitally enhanced photos of others.

He said that youngsters often make themselves look better by taking out blemishes and put huge pressure on other young people to conform to some sort of ideal image.

Nilesh Sojitra, a consultant at London's Royal Free Hospital, said that the distortion of what was socially acceptable was a 'worrying trend'.
