As the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan visited the famous ancient temple of Shree Mahakaleshwara in Ujjain to pray for rains on Monday, a clash flared up between devotees and the police when the area was cordoned off to prevent 'Shiv Kawads,' from entering the temple premises.
The incident took place as police officials tried to clear the way for Chouhan, who visited the temple with his wife, to pray for good rains in the state.
As the situation turned ugly, the police resorted to baton charge in order to scatter the protesting crowd from the spot.
Speaking to media persons, Chouhan said he is a theist and believes that God will listen to his prayers.
"If it rains well, sowing will be good and hence crops will be good. This is what I have prayed to lord Shiva. I am a theist and a firm believer in His powers, which control the entire universe. He is the 'Mahakaal' (Lord of destruction). Rains should come on time for humans and other living beings," said Chouhan.
On being asked about the incident, he refused to comment saying he was not aware of the episode.
"I have no information regarding this matter. I will only be able to comment after I have some information," said the state chief.
A weather office report stated that the monsoon rains were above average in the past week for the first time in the current season, as the downpours resumed after a worrying fortnight-long pause over the central part of the country.
