Sialkot brothers hanged for murder

Two brothers, who were convicted for killing six people from the same family, were hanged at a jail in Pakistan's Sialkot district.

Nasir Mehmood and Tahir Iqbal were hanged for the 2002 murders, foreign media quoted senior prison official Chaudhry Arshad Saeed Arain, report Dawn. They had killed, six members of a family over a land dispute.

The hanging comes days after Amnesty International criticised Pakistan for becoming the world's third most prolific executioner after China and Iran.

Islamabad had lifted the a six-year moratorium on the death penalty after Taliban militants gunned down more than 150 people, mostly children, at the Army Public School in Peshawar in December 2014.

Earlier, Hangings were reinstated only for those convicted of terrorism, but in March the punishment was extended to all capital offences.

Amnesty International in its report this week said that at least 1,634 people were put to death globally last year, the highest figure recorded since 1989. Pakistan had executed 326 people.
