Sikhs celebrate 'Gurta Gadhi Diwas' at Amritsar's Golden Temple complex

Thousands of Sikh devotees thronged the Golden Temple in Amritsar on Monday to celebrate 'Gurta Gadhi Diwas', the anniversary of the coronation of the community's sixth Sikh guru, Guru Hargobind.

Guru Hargobind became the sixth guru on May 25, 1606 after his father Guru Arjan Dev.

Devotees took a holy dip and paid their respects to Guru Hargobind. The Golden Temple was decorated with beautiful lights on the occasion and fireworks illuminated the night sky above the temple.

Harpreet Kaur, a devotee, expressed her happiness at being present at the event by saying, "Today, Guru Hargobind became the sixth guru of the Sikhs. For this reason, we burn crackers and celebrate this day. I am feeling very good and at peace here in the Golden Temple."

"Guru Hargobind became the sixth guru of the Sikhs. So, to celebrate this, we are at the Golden Temple to pray. We enjoyed the fireworks," said another devotee, Manjot Singh.

Guru Hargobind also built the 'Akal Takht', the throne of the timeless one. It is one of the five seats of power of the Sikh religion and is located in the Golden Temple complex.
