Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has said that the government will take the opinion of all opposition parties on establishing a mechanism to investigate alleged human rights violations in the country within the framework of the Constitution.

While addressing an all-party meet on proposals of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Sirisena assured that his government is firm on taking appropriate action, the Colombo Page web site reported.

The current UNHRC proposal called for a domestic internal inquiry on the human rights violations which took place during the civil war.

Sirisena, while comparing the earlier and current UNHRC proposals said the present U.S. resolution had watered down human rights allegations.

Some parties had earlier suggested the government to reject the proposal. However, the President stated that a serious of all party representatives will be called to hold discussion regarding the proposal and what should be done to address the proposal.
