Congress Party president Sonia Gandhi today asserted that her party will make sure to get the Women's Reservation Bill passed in parliament.
Speaking at the occasion of her husband Rajiv Gandhi's 70th birth anniversary here, Sonia Gandhi said, "Even if we are in opposition now, we will not rest until we get the Women Reservation's Bill passed in Parliament."
"Rajiv Gandhi always wanted 33 percent reservation for women in parliament and assembly, although some parties opposed, and hence, we couldn't get it passed," Sonia added.
She stressed on the fact that former PM Rajiv Gandhi used to say that no country could progress by ignoring half of the population, and also added that he worked for championing the rights of women in the country.
The Congress president also mocked the BJP-led NDA government for re-implementing the previous government's policies.
"Those who have come to power, they are showing a different picture to the people of this country. This present government is re-implementing the policies framed by us when we were in power," Sonia added.
Several functions are being held across the country to remember the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's 70th birth anniversary. The day is also celebrated as Sadbhavna Diwas (harmony day).
