Sonia, Rahul accept people's verdict in Maharashtra and Haryana

The top brass of the Congress leadership on Sunday conceded defeat officially while accepting the people's verdict delivered to the party in Maharashtra and Haryana.

In her statement, Congress President Sonia Gandhi said, "Congress party accepts the election verdict delivered by the people of Maharashtra and Haryana with humility. (Congress) resolves to play a constructive and vigilant role."

"People of Maharashtra and Haryana trusted us with their mandate thrice and twice respectively. Hope that the parties forming Govt will fulfill the promises that they made," she added.

In his statement Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi while congratulating the BJP on its win also maintained that his party will work hard to regain the confidence of the people.

"We accept the verdict of people, people voted for change after 15 years of our government in Maharashtra and Haryana. I congratulate BJP on their success," said Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi.

"Congress party will work hard on the ground to once again earn the confidence of the people," he added.

The vote counting trends which are underway shows that the BJP is emerging as the single largest party in both Haryana and Maharashtra.

In the case of Maharashtra it is currently leading in 38 seats while winning in 84 when the report was filed. Congress managed to win 34 seats while leading in nine seats. BJP's former ally, Shiv Sena has bagged 44 seats leading in 17 seats. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has won in 27 seats while taking a lead in 15, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena has bagged one seat. Others have bagged six seats while leading in one seat.

Meanwhile, the NCP has offered outside support to the BJP in Maharashtra.

In Haryana, the BJP has won in 45 seats while leading in two seats. Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) is emerging as the runner-up bagging 18 seats with a lead in one seat. The Congress is ahead in one seat while it bagged 14 seats in its kitty. Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) has got two seats, while others have got four seats and leading in one seat till last reports came in.
