Sonia's letter to President to spare Rajiv Gandhi's assassins an injustice: Swamy

Janata Party president and activist lawyer Subramanian Swamy on Thursday said that Congress President Sonia Gandhi should not have written a letter to the President to spare the assassins of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, and added that she has betrayed the public by doing so.

"Why did Sonia Gandhi write a letter to the President and requested not to give death sentence to them? What interest does she have in doing that? She has done injustice to the nation by doing and needs to give an explanation for it," said Swamy.

"All those who want Rajiv Gandhi's assassins to be freed are disloyal and are betraying the people of the nation," he said.

He further said that the Tamil Nadu government had no right in interfering in this issue.

"As far as the Tamil Nadu cabinet's demand is concerned it is completely illegal. Tamil Nadu Government doesn't even have the power to do it. Only central government has the authority since it was a central act, the state cannot interfere in it," Swamy said.

"I would like the PM to send a message to Jayalalithaa to take back this decision. Even if then it doesn't change, then he can threaten them to dismiss the state government for not following the central government's decision," he said.

"Such anti-social forces mustn't be encouraged. The anti national powers in Tamil Nadu need to be discouraged. Releasing the assassins of Rajiv Gandhi would be an insult to the nation," he added.
