Sony may soon roll out own Windows phone

Sony is reportedly in talks with software giant Microsoft to roll out a Windows Phone as it seeks to move away from being a single OS manufacturer.

Head of Sony Mobile Europe, Pierre Perron, said that the company didn't want to offer only one flavour of mobile OS, adding that they were in discussion with Microsoft on broader Sony spectrum.

According to TechRadar, Perron stressed that Sony is exploring using Microsoft's Windows platform for smartphones, while another aspect is to something on top of it.

There have been rumours that Sony is planning a comeback in the Windows Phone space for a while now, and this statement echoes a similar one made by Perron in 2012.

Sony has previously launched its Xperia X1 with Windows Mobile in 2008 but its X2 sequel was launched but never released, and the company had the shifted its focus to Android platform.

Perron stated that being a single OS manufacturer isn't a viable position in the long term, adding that although they enjoy a good collaboration with Google, the search giant has a relationship with direct competitors, possibly hinting at other phone makers who would be looking at launching a Windows phone too.
