Spain's Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria was present in a ceremony at their base in western Herat province. She was accompanied by Defense Chief of Staff Adm. Fernando Garcia Sanchez and Army Chief of Staff Gen. Jaime Dominguez Buj, the Tolo news reported.
Santamaria praised the soldiers for their dedication and praised them for their work in missions abroad.
She also remembered the soldiers who have lost their lives during the mission.
It is impossible to forget that the army came "to a war that demanded the greatest efforts right up to the ultimate consequences," she said.
Over 30,000 Spanish troops have served in Afghanistan since the launch of the mission in January 2002.
