A bill will be tabled in the Sri Lanka parliament today to amend the 2015 Budget Appropriation Act that was presented by the previous Mahinda Rajapaksa-led government.

The proposed amendment will give legal effect to the new government's budgetary proposals, reports the Colombo Page web site.

President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe decided to present an interim budget to implement its proposals as outlined in the election manifesto.

However, since parliament has already approved the 2015 Budget, the new government has decided to amend the Appropriation Act and alter the budgetary provisions.

The Cabinet has approved the bill to be presented in parliament and it will be referred to the Supreme Court for its determination.

The parliamentary debate on the bill will be held on February 5, 6 and 7.
