An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 has struck off Indonesia's coast of southern Sumatra, with tremors being felt as far away as Singapore and Malaysia.

According to local media reports, the quake hits 72 kilometres west of Padang, the capital of Indonesia's West Sumatra province at a depth of about 10 kilometres.

Indonesia's seismological agency BMKG said there was no threat of a tsunami.

However, there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage in the quake.

The world's largest archipelago, Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because of to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.
