Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by the Sri Lanka Navy have called off their hunger strike in a jail here after Sri Lankan officials assured that they would be released within a week, the Colombo Page reports.
The 24 Tamil Nadu fishermen called off their fast after Sri Lankan officials assured a fishermen's organization in Tamil Nadu that the fishermen would be released in a week, the Express News Service has reported.
The Indian fishermen started a fast in a prison in Jaffna on Monday demanding that they be released along with their boats.
Sri Lanka Navy arrested the fishermen, 16 from Pudukottai and eight from Rameswaram on September 28 when they were illegally fishing near Katchatheevu Islet. A Sri Lankan court ordered to remand them in a prison in Jaffna.
Meanwhile, fishermen in 631 mechanized boats who put out to sea from Rameswaram on Monday, returned without fishing after the Sri Lankan Navy reportedly threatened to arrest them, The Hindu reported.
