India's first inter-state tiger translocation project has been suspended temporarily after a male tiger brought from Kanha Tiger Reserve of Madhya Pradesh to the Satkosia Tiger Reserve in Odisha's Angul district was found dead on Wednesday. Tiger Mahavir was one of the two Royal Bengal Tigers.
Anup Nayak, ADG, National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) confirmed the same.
According to a statement of the Satkosia Tiger Reserve, on November 14 at 1 pm, tiger monitoring team reported about the mortality of translocated male tiger. The incident occurred 500 meters from Raigoda to Nuagada forest road inside the Nuagarh reserve forest of Athagarh forest division which has been proposed to be included in Satkosia Tiger Reserve, the statement added.
The statement further stated that on Prima facie investigation of the carcass, "a deep lacerated and five-day-old maggotted infected wound was observed in the dorsal neck region of the tiger which may be the cause of the mortality".
It, however, added that the exact reason of the death and time of incidence will be ascertained after conducting a detailed post-mortem examination.
"The disposal of carcass through incineration will be carried out in presence of the veterinarian team and others by following NTCA protocol," Satkosia Tiger Reserve said.
