Tight security in place for India's 69th Independence Day celebrations

Tight security has been put in place for the 69th Independence Day celebrations of India, including the deployment over 40,000 security personnel and roof top markings for the first time.

According to reports, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi due to address the nation for the second time on the occasion of Independence Day, security agencies have been undertaking constant and a consistent review of the multi-layer security cover in the national capital to ward off the possibility of a terror strike.

Apart from the above security measures, unmanned aerial vehicles, choppers and 500 CCTV cameras have been installed at high altitude to locate crucial and sensitive spots.

Snipers have been deployed at designated spots in most of the 400 marked rooftops for the first time by Delhi Police.

Ground-to-air security apparatus has been applied in a five-kilometre radius. Over 150 National Security Guard (NSG) commandos, a SWAT unit and paramilitary forces have been positioned in the radius of 200-metre from the ramparts of the Red Fort, from where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation this morning.

Specialised units like the quick reaction teams, a bomb squad and a dog squad have been deployed with commando units of Delhi Police at sensitive points. A no-fly zone has been put in place.

Nearly 6,000 local police personnel have been deployed in various markets, airports, railway stations, inter-state bus terminals, metro stations and other places of strategic importance in the capital.

Traffic has been prevented from plying on Netaji Subhash Marg, S P Mukherjee Marg, Chandni Chowk Road (from Fountain Chowk to Red Fort), Nisad Raj Marg and Link Road between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. today.

The Delhi Metro has commenced operations from 4.30 a.m. for today.
