Cultural events play an important role in promoting better understanding among people from different regions, besides helping in highlighting the rich culture.

Recently, a two-day long cultural heritage festival held at the Nazrul Kalakshetra in Agartala brought together several traditional and folk artists from the Northeast, West Bengal and Rajasthan.

The festival was organized by the Asiatic Society, Kolkata in collaboration with the Northeast Zonal Cultural Centre, Dimapur.

Over 10 cultural teams put up an array of enthralling traditional and folk dance performances.

Various indigenous tribes of the Northeast like Chakma, Naga, Kaloi, Lusai and Uchoi showcased their traditional dance forms. The audience also got to sample Rajasthani folk music.

"If we want to spread this cultural event in many places in northeast India, it will help us to recover their cultural heritage, recover our Indian cultural heritage more. So, the asiatic society has started this program," said Amitabha Ghosh, an organizer.

Events like these not only help change perceptions but also promote better understanding by providing a window to each other's culture.

"It's all about promoting our culture through friendship. By coming here we represent not only Nagaland but we also improvise our culture. It brings unity among us," said Lewis, an artist from Nagaland.

"Such programmes are a very good means for people to understand each other. More such events should be held frequently so that people get to know each other's culture and understand each other in a better way," said Sourab Kaushik, an audience.

Such programmes help bring together people from different ethnic groups, and facilitate the promotion and preservation of the indigenous culture of the region.
