The United States has congratulated India on becoming the newest member of the Australia Group, an informal forum that seeks to prevent the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons.
U.S. Department of State Spokesperson Heather Nauert said, "This latest accomplishment underscores the Indian government's excellent non-proliferation credentials and commitment to preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, including by regulating the trade of sensitive goods and technologies. Its accession bolsters the effectiveness of the regime's non-proliferation efforts."
Terming India as a valued non-proliferation partner, Nauret added, "We look forward to continuing our work with India in the Australia Group in furtherance of our shared non-proliferation goals."
The Australia group, initially consisting of 15 members, held its first meeting in Brussels, Belgium, in September 1989. With the incorporation of India on January 19, 2018, it now has 43 members, including Australia, the European Commission, all 28 member states of the European Union, Ukraine, and Argentina. The name comes from Australia's initiative to create the group. Australia manages the secretariat.
