United States Army General Martin Dempsey has said that the U.S. would not rule out sending small number of forces to Mosul to fight alongside Iraqi troops against Islamic State (IS) militants.

According to Fox News, Dempsey said that they are still considering the issue.

He said that Iraq would need about 80,000 army troops to retake the areas it lost to IS militants and restore its border with Syria.

The request for more U.S. forces in Iraq would create centres to help train the additional troops, added the top general.

The U.S. President Barack Obama has repeatedly vowed that U.S. combat troops would not be fighting on the ground in Iraq.
