President Trump's foreign policy advisers and military men have proposed a significant shift in strategy in Afghanistan, putting the United States back on a war footing against the Taliban.
The shift in Afghanistan's policy comes at a time when Trump's top team members, including National Security Adviser H. R. McMaster and Secretary of Defense James Mattis travelled to Afghanistan to discuss their proposals for enhancing US role in battling a resilient Taliban as well as terror groups ,including ISIS.
The plan is yet to be approved by U.S. President Donald Trump. "National Security Adviser H. R. McMaster and Mattis favour the troop increase to accelerate training missions for Afghan forces so as to give a tough fight to Taliban," CNN reported.
"The proposed strategy will, however, maintain the Obama administration's push toward reconciliation between the Taliban and the Afghan government," CNN reported.
The new plan recommends for an enhanced U.S. military role as part of a broader effort to push resurgent Taliban back to the negotiating table including scaling up strikes against the militant group.
Afghan Ministry of Defense spokesman Gen. Dawlat Waziri said that a troop increase would benefit Afghanistan and the international community.
