Uber fans have lashed out at the company's detractors to defend the transport app's price surge policy by saying that it gives customers a choice.
Alleging that people lack understanding of the basic economics of the pricing model, Damon Za said that the surge charge pricing applies only demand exceeds supply. If 1000 people need a ride from 100 drivers, who would determine which 900 people miss out? The surge charge policy automatically sorts that out as the 100 people who are willing to pay will get the rides, he explained. He added that everyone has a choice to accept the price or not, reported News 24.
Craig Whittington, another user, put forward the same argument by saying that the policy gives users a choice to make alternate arrangements if they are unwilling to pay the price.
