The mobile car-hailing service Uber has said that the company is resuming operations in New Delhi where it was banned earlier following the alleged rape of a passenger by one of the drivers.
Uber has applied for a taxi license in the city to resume operations completely but it claims to be only a technology company that connects passengers to drivers rather than a full-fledged taxi firm.
According to the Verge, Uber will not be fully operational in the city until its application for license is approved.
Uber said in a statement that they are only allowing driver-partners who have gone through a complete re-verification of their Police clearance in the past six weeks to get back with them.
For additional screenings, Uber is conducting independent background checks on all driver partners and vehicle documentation reviews.
Uber had admitted after the alleged rape that the company did not conduct background checks in India as opposed to the U.S. where the company performs seven-year background checks.
