European football's governing body UEFA has blasted racist attacks in the Spanish football league and has called for action after footie fans subjected foreign league players to monkey taunts and banana-throwing.
Spain's Football League quickly followed in the UEFA's footsteps, warning sanctions of racist behavior and also announced compulsory training for its entire member clubs to avoid such repetition.
According to Sport24, this has come as a result of football fans throwing a banana at Barcelona's Brazilian midfielder Dani Alves, which has been followed a week later by fans throwing monkey taunts at Levante's Senegalese midfielder Pape Diop.
UEFA president Michel Platini's spokesman Pedro Pinto said in a Twitter post that the UEFA and its president strongly condemn all forms of discrimination including recent racist behavior of fans in Spain.
Pinto added that UEFA has got tough rules and sanctions against all forms of discrimination for all of its competitions and when instances occur outside their jurisdiction, they support appropriate action being taken by the relevant authorities.
Meanwhile Spain's professional football league, the LFP, said that it 'strongly condemns' any racist, discriminatory, violent, xenophobic or intolerant acts, especially in football and sport.
The league also said in a statement that it would hunt such kind of behavior.
Diop has accused Atletico Madrid fans of racism as they subjected the midfielder to monkey chants as his side defeated the La Liga leaders 2-0 this weekend.
Diop, who reacted by dancing to the racist chants, said that the fans have to stop making monkey gestures at the black players.
