The war in Syria plunged 80 percent of its people into poverty, a United Nations-backed report has claimed.
According to China Daily, the report said that the Syrian conflict decreased people's life expectancy by 20 years and led to massive economic losses to the tune of 200 billion dollars since it began in 2010.
The report prepared by the Syrian Center for Policy Research also noted a "systematic collapse and destruction" of Syria's economic foundations, which resulted in an alienated population and a government with waning sovereignty over its territory and resources, extremely high inflation and mass unemployment.
The report was supported by the UN Development Program and the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.
