A top official said that the United States attacked the Syrian affiliate of terror group, Al Qaeda, just as it was nearing the execution phase of an attack in Europe or the homeland, a report said.
While briefing the press after the U.S. conducted air strikes in Syria, Lt. Gen. William Mayville, director of operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff said that they were watching the group closely for some time and believed that the group was plotting an imminent attack. He also conceded that the group had recruited Westerners to serve as operatives and infiltrate their homelands, reported CBS News.
He added that the Khorasan group was clearly not focused on either the Assad regime or the Syrian people.
Mayville said that the strikes will continue until their ability to conduct an attack on the homeland or on the "allies" is degraded.
The military official said that the strikes began around midnight in Syria and targeted Khorasan compounds, manufacturing workshops and training camps around Aleppo and Ar-Raqqah.
