Delhi Police arrested notorious gangster Neeraj Bawana from his residence in the city in the early hours of Tuesday after a three-year operation involving the forces of multiple states.
"Bawana's influence was considerable in the national capital, especially Outer Delhi, North Delhi and West Delhi. It was a challenge for us to arrest as soon as possible. We constituted a special team in order to catch him at the earliest," Commissioner (Special Cell) S N Shrivastava told the media here.
"On the basis of technical and human inputs, we followed him all over the country, including Kolkata, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Baroda, and finally, we received information that he would visit his residence in the Bawana region of Delhi, from where he was nabbed. We also found a U.S.-made Smith and Wesson weapon in his possession," he added.
Shrivastava further said that Bawana will be booked under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act.
"He has been booked under IPC Sections 186 (Obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and 383 (Extortion). We have also filed a MCOCA case against him," he said.
Known for targeting businessmen and realtors in Delhi for extortion, the 24-year-old Bawana has reportedly over 100 cases registered against him. One of his brothers had been arrested by the police in 2014, while his mother and another brother were arrested from the Indira Gandhi International airport in the city for carrying illegal ammunition last month.
