Water tankers deployed in border areas of Gujarat to tackle scarcity

Ten water tankers were sent to Gujarat's Kutch district in order to meet the demands of villagers living in the border areas.

The tankers were flagged off from Rajkot city by the state's water minister, Vijay Rupani. He said that though the Narmada Dam provides drinking water to 800 plus villages in the Kutch region, there are some 45 villages, which are near the Pakistan border, where pipelines are not available.

"We will send water to more than 50 villages through these tankers. More than 200 people, who are scattered, will get drinking water every day through these tankers and all arrangements have been made," he said.

Rupani added that the state government is fully prepared to tackle water supply problem during summer season.

Ten tankers cost rupees 150 lakhs.

"We have deployed these special tankers so that no village, no person faces any water shortage," said an irrigation officer, Rakesh Patel.

Most of the water sources in the country are contaminated by sewage and agricultural run-off.
