England striker Wayne Rooney, who has been retained as the captain of the national football team under new manager Sam Allardyce, has revealed that he will call curtains on his international career after the World Cup in Russia in 2018.
While admitting that he has had a fantastic international career, the 30-year-old insisted that he had prepared his mind to retire after the tournament in Russia as it would be the right time to do so.
"I've had a fantastic international career so far and played a lot of games and enjoyed every minute but at some point it's going to come to an end. I'm not old, I'm 30, and come Russia that'll be the time for me to say goodbye to international football," Rooney was quoted as saying by goal.com.
"It's still two years away and I started playing professional football at 16 and international when I was 17 so it'll have been 15 years, it's a lot of years and I think that'll be the right time to finish," he added.
Rooney, who has been England's record goal-scorer with 53 goals, will win his 116th international cap when he leads the team against Slovakia in a World Cup qualifier on Sunday.
