The Supreme Court on Tuesday said 'if the Centre does not act towards banning khap panchayats, then the court will step in'.

The three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra, comprising Justices A.M. Khanwilkar and D.Y. Chandrachud, rapped the Centre for failure in controlling attacks on love marriages and diktats of 'khap panchayats'.

The apex court also observed that "no khap panchayat or society can question" if an adult man and woman opt for inter-caste marriage.

The Prevention of Crimes in the Name of 'Honour' and Tradition Bill, 2010 was introduced in the Lok Sabha and it was pending and the government said it is working on it.
