With 16th goal, Germany's Klose becomes record scorer in World Cup history

Lazio and German striker Miroslav Klose on Tuesday became the record scorer in World Cup history by netting his 16th finals goal in the 7-1 semi-final victory over Brazil.

Klose, 36, overtook previous record holder and former Brazil striker Ronaldo (15). he had earlier drawn level with Ronaldo by scoring against Ghana earlier in the competition.

Klose has appeared for Germany in 136 games and is the side's leading goalscorer with 71 goals. He is the third player to net at four World Cup finals, reports the BBC.

Klose's goal against Brazil came in his 23rd World Cup appearance, a tally only compatriot Lothar Matthaus has bettered.

Germany have never lost a game in which he has scored.

Top five World Cup goalscorers are as follows: Miroslav Klose (16 in 23 matches), Ronaldo (15 in 19 matches), Gerd Muller (14 in 13 matches), Just Fontaine (13 in six matches) and Pele (12 in 14 matches).
