Over 76,000 people have been killed in the Syrian conflict in the year 2014 marking it as the deadliest year yet in the country's four year conflict, said activists.
According to the BBC, among the dead, 17,790 were civilians while 3,501 were children, said the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Islamic State militants group and others have caused much violence in the country.
U.S. led coalition airstrikes as well as fighting between government troops and rebel forces inflicted much violence and caused many deaths in the country.
Meanwhile, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad marked the New Year with a visit to front-line troops in the Damascus suburb of Jobar.
