German auto major BMW has now made it official to launch the much anticipated 1-Series in India on September 3, 2013. We have already seen the kind of response the all new Mercedes-Benz A-Class has received, now the entry of 1-Series will only enhance the competition, thus giving customers more options to chose from. Audi too is planning to launch the A3 compact saloon at a very competitive price. So, the compact luxury segment won't be the same in future as it is today.
The 1-Series will have both the petrol and diesel engine options. While the diesel version of the car will derive its power from a 2.0-litre motor, capable to produce 143bhp, the petrol version will have a 1.6-litre turbocharged direct injection motor, which also does its duty to the Mini Cooper and Cooper S. The 1.6-litre petrol version too impresses with its power output figure of 136bhp. Both the engines will be mated to a 8-speed automatic transmission gearbox.
BMW has already started promoting the vehicle aggressively, they came up with a first of its kind marketing initiative which gave ten lucky winners a fully sponsored trip to Germany to drive the 1-Series along with cricket maestro Sachin Tendulkar and Indian FIA GT driver, Armaan Ebrahim.
The company has also revealed that the BMW 1-series will be produced locally at their Chennai based plant, so to keep its costs in check. So, expect the luxury hatchback to be priced around Rs. 20-25 lakh.
