Datsun's answer to the Maruti Alto, Hyundai Eon, Tata Nano and the Renault Kwid officially goes on sale today. The redi-GO is available in five variants with prices starting at Rs 2.39 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Variant wise pricing is as follows:

  • D - Rs. 2.39 lakh
  • A - Rs. 2.83 lakh
  • T - Rs. 3.09 lakh
  • T(O) - Rs. 3.19 lakh
  • S - Rs. 3.34 lakh

Bookings are already underway at dealerships, for a token amount of Rs 5,000.

The Looks

Unlike the Kwid, the Datsun follows a conventional tall-boy design. The profile gets plenty of cuts and creases that give the baby Datsun an edgy look. The automaker will be offering the redi-GO in attractive colours such as lime green and deep red, which are sure to appeal to the youth. We like the smoked sweptback headlamps and the first-in-class LED daytime running lamps. The overall styling is a welcome change from what we've seen in the segment.

The Cabin

The interiors follow a safe grey and beige combo, but the equipment list seems spartan when compared to the Renault. For instance, it skips on the touchscreen infotainment system for a conventional single-DIN unit. Space is nothing to write home about, but it is adequate for four adults. Boot space is rated at 222 litres (Kwid = 300 litres).

The Drive

The redi-GO is based on the same CMF-A (Common Module Family) platform as the Renault Kwid. It also borrows its sibling's 800cc motor that develops 54PS and 72Nm. Claimed fuel efficiency is rated at 25.17kmpl. The clutch and the steering is light, which makes the redi-GO a perfect city runabout. Ride quality is particularly good and the little Datsun doesn't get upset easily by undulations or irregularities in the road surface.

What's next?

Datsun confirmed that they would be updating the redi-GO once every six months. Just like the Kwid, we expect it to sport a 1.0-litre engine and an AMT in the near future.

In case you are planning on buying one, here's all you need to know to make the decision. And if you're wondering how it stacks up against its sibling, the Renault Kwid, follow this link here.
