This January, it looks like Mahindra has something in store for everyone. Besides the KUV100 which is lined up to enter the hatchback segment, Imperio pickup will be an addition to the small commercial vehicle segment. This latest pickup will be launched by the Indian automaker on January 6, 2016. Mahindra currently holds more than 50% share in the light commercial vehicle sector and already has Genio in the segment. Although there is no confirmation about the future of Genio, rumours are that Mahindra might continue to sell both vehicles. Imperio will rival the likes of Tata Xenon and Isuzu D-Max in India.
Being manufactured at Mahindra’s Chakan plant near Pune, this vehicle is the fruit of research and development activities carried out by the automaker at the Chennai facility. Imperio shares its platform with Genio but has a more aggressive outside styling. Also, the ride and performance of this pickup is expected to be better. Imperio might be powered by the same 2.5-litre engine which powers Genio. If this happens, the pickup will have around 74bhp of power and 220Nm of torque at its disposal.
A teaser of the upcoming pickup is also out. It shows that this new vehicle offers easy loading, performance along with comforts like air conditioning and the new styling. Also, Mahindra has set up a website featuring the countdown for its launch. Pravin Shah, President and Chief Executive (automotive), M&M Ltd, while speaking about the launch said, “Since we are the market leader in the small commercial vehicle segment, I am sure that with the addition of the Imperio, we will consolidate our leadership in the commercial vehicle space even more.”
