BMW today unveiled its new 2-series Gran Tourer, ahead of its official debut at the forthcoming Geneva motor show. Sibling model to the recently-introduced 2-series ActiveTourer, the versatile MPV is the company’s second dedicated front-wheel drive model.
BMW is calling it as the ‘world’s first premium compact model to offer up to seven seats,’ however its more-or-less a grown-up 2-Series Active Tourer with an added third row. At 4556 mm in length, 1800 mm in width and 1608 mm in height, the 2-series Gran Tourer is a considerable 214 mm longer and a mere 20mm taller than the 2-series ActiveTourer, though it boasts the same width.
Boot capacity is put at 645 litres in standard five-seat configuration, jumping to a roomy 1905 litres with the rear seats down, that split and fold in a 40:20:40 ratio. In comparison, the five-seater ActiveTourer offers a respective 465 litres and 1510 litres. Except the extra seating capacity, there is hardly anything new on the inside. It also gets the same dashboard and fittings as the sibling.
The new 2-series Gran Tourer will be available with the choice of several petrol and diesel engines, all turbocharged. While the transmission options offered are a standard six-speed manual and optional 8-speed automatic gearbox.
In addition to the standard version, the new BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer is being offered in a further four model variants. Beyond these variants, the M Sport trim comes with a choice of the M Aerodynamics package, individual high-gloss shadow line, M leather steering wheel and M Sport seats, among other features.
