Benchmarks off day's high; breadth negative

The main indices pared gains in mid-afternoon trade. At 14:25 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, gained 330.12 points or 0.63% at 52,636.62. The Nifty 50 index gained 73.55 points or 0.47% at 15,760.95. The June 2021 F&O contracts will expire today, 24 June 2021.

Broader markets traded with losses. The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index fell 0.61%. The S&P BSE Small-Cap index lost 0.34%.

Sellers outnumbered buyers. On the BSE, 1,413 shares rose and 1,749 shares fell. A total of 145 shares were unchanged.

Reliance Industries (RIL) was down 1.23% to Rs 2177.90. RIL is conducting its 44th annual general meeting (AGM) virtually today.

Coronavirus Update:

Total COVID-19 confirmed cases worldwide stood at 17,95,99,617 with 38,91,945 deaths. India reported 6,27,057 active cases of COVID-19 infection and 3,91,981 deaths while 2,90,63,740 patients have been discharged, according to the data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

India recorded 54,336 new coronavirus cases and 1,321 deaths in the last 24 hours ending 9 A.M. on Thursday. With this the country's total caseload has risen to over 3 crore, while the death toll has increased to 3.91 lakh. Meanwhile, the active caseload has dropped to 6.27 lakh.

Buzzing Index:

The Nifty Media index declined 0.85% to 1,839.75, slipping for second trading session. The media index lost 1.34% in two days.

Dish TV (down 2.43%), PVR (down 1.41%), Sun TV Network (down 1.01%), Inox Leisure (down 0.94%), Zee Entertainment (down 0.88%) and Network 18 (down 0.75%) were top losers in media space.

Numbers to Watch:

In the foreign exchange market, the partially convertible rupee fell to 74.235 compared with its previous closing of 74.2775

MCX Gold futures for 5 August 2021 settlement fell 0.11% to Rs 47,020.

The US Dollar index (DXY), which tracks the greenback's value against a basket of currencies, was down 0.04% to 91.748.

The yield on 10-year benchmark federal paper rose to 6.021% from its previous close of 6.018%.

In the commodities market, Brent crude for August 2021 settlement rose 52 cents to $75.71 a barrel.
