India will begin to export an additional power to an extent of 500 mw to Bangladesh as soon as the work on SAARC grid is accomplished in next one year or so and draw a considerably higher volumes of hydro power from nations such as Bhutan and Nepal, according to Executive Director, NLDC, Power System Operation Corporation, Mr. V K Agrawal.

Taking part at a National Conference on Power Transmission and Distribution under aegis of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry here today, Mr. Agrawal said in view of deepening and thickening bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh following conclusion of the recent summit level talks between the Prime Ministers of the two countries, a decision has been taken to supply additional 500 mw of gas fed electricity to Bangladesh.

Already India has been exporting 500 mw of power away to Bangladesh as per stipulation and provisions of their bilateral provisions and the government has recently concluded that another 500 mw power supply be restored to Bangladesh with completion of SAARC grid which is unlikely to take more than a year or so, said Mr. Agrawal.

Without elaborating on the quantum of hydro power imports from Nepal and Bhutan, Mr. Agrawal held that India would be transmitted a great amount of hydro power from these nations after the SAARC grid becomes critical.

The Conference was unanimously concluded, recommending to the government that time has come when it should bring in a legislation empowering the nation with a right to electricity in view of massive capacity additions on the generation site and also evolve and build an institution through a statutory mechanism to regulate the state electricity boards so that distribution is reformed to enable and facilitate uninterrupted power to end users.
