Kharif Acreage Lower By 2.26%

According to data released by the Agriculture Ministry, the total sown area of kharif crops stood at 975.16 lakh hectares (lh) as on 23rd August 2019 compared to 998 lh covered in the corresponding week last year, recording a fall of 2.26% after a deficit of 4.14% in last week. The area under major crop rice was 335 lh, down around 6.44% on last year. The area under pulses stands at 124.56 lh, down 3% on year. However the Tur area is up by 0.39% at 43.43 lh. Acreage under coarse cereals is up 0.57% at 165.03 lh. Maize area is up 1.85% at 75.09 lh. Oilseeds area is also up marginally by 0.20% at 167.89 lh. Soybean area is up 0.91% at 112.51 lh. Sugarcane acreage stands at 52.37 lh, down 5.59% while Cotton area is up 5.73% at 123.54 lh.
