Railways passenger traffic dips 3.9% to 690.44 million in August 2019
Freight loading of the Indian Railways (IR) declined 6.1% to 91.06 million tonnes (mt) in August 2019 over August 2018. Meanwhile, the freight revenue fell 2.0% to Rs 9203.70 crore in August 2019.The net tonne kilometers (ntkm) dipped 8.7% to 51985 million in August 2019. The revenue per tonne moved up 4.4% to Rs 1011, while the revenue per ntkm rose 7.4% to 177 paise.
The freight loading of IR stood at 498.32 mt in April-August FY2020, showing a growth of 0.8% over 494.47 mt in April-August FY2019. The freight loading at 498.32 mt for April-August FY2020 was lower than the estimate of 509.36 mt for the period.
Coal transportation, accounting for 45.5% of the total loading, dipped 9.5% to 41.47 mt, while loading declined for cement at 10.0% to 7.83 mt, other goods 7.9% to 6.84 mt and fertilizers 11.4% to 4.11 mt. Further, the loadings of finished steel also fell 8.4% to 4.39 mt, food grains 6.3% to 3.15 mt, container service 3.0% to 5.26 mt and raw material for steel plant 3.4% to 2.29 mt in August 2019. However, the loading of iron ore increased 9.0% to 12.06 mt and petroleum oil products 7.3% to 3.66 mt in August 2019.
The Revenue from coal transportation, accounting for 49.0% of the total freight revenue, declined 1.5% to Rs 4508.71 crore, while freight revenue dipped for finished steel at 13.2% to Rs 562.56 crore, other goods 11.8% to Rs 556.79 crore and cement 10.5% to Rs 593.60 crore. The loading revenue of food grains also declined 11.2% to Rs 515.76 crore, fertilizers 8.0% to Rs 464.70 crore and raw material for steel plant 0.4% to Rs 199.73 crore. However, the freight revenue from iron ore moved up 26.6% to Rs 797.73 crore, petroleum oil products 11.6% to Rs 470.10 crore and container service 1.0% to Rs 534.02 crore in August 2019.
