Volunteers of a cleaning drive at Lake Titicaca in Peru collected over 100 tonnes of solid waste as part of an environmental protection campaign.
More than 1,500 volunteers participated in the drive on Saturday which involved the collection of plastic bags, disposable bottles, tires, cartons and glass near the wastewater oxidation lagoon of the city of Puno, reports Efe news.
The day was organised by workers of the Binational Lake Titicaca Special Project (PEBLT) with the support of young people from the Environmental Volunteer CLIP Latin America group.
The head of the Binational Special Lake Titicaca Project, Adan Quisocala, said some people continue to throw garbage into the lake.
The lake of more than 8,300 sq km is in the territory of Peru and Bolivia and is an important tourist destination for its floating islands and pre-Inca archaeological remains.
